O'Neil was a participant in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when the singer was still in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 rounds since the judges were impressed at her singing performances. O'Neil was praised highly from panel of judges. She suffered major defeats in the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up on the third row, as well as the in the bottom two. They were stunned by the decision and informed the crowd they believed that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil did not make it to the bottom 3 again after numerous outstanding performance. The performance she gave on the 7th of September of 2005 was awe-inspiring that judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
